Firearms and Weapons

This page provides very important information if you are thinking of bringing into Canada anything with significant potential for use as a weapon; including not only firearms but also knives, mace and pepper spray. Canada's firearms laws make the country safer for both residents and visitors. We suggest you contact one of our customs offices or a chief firearms officer for information before you attempt to import a firearm or weapon.

The following requirements apply to firearms and weapons:

  • You must be at least 18 years of age.
  • You cannot import prohibited firearms, or any prohibited weapons or devices, including silencers and replica firearms.
  • All revolvers, pistols, fully automatic firearms and other weapons, and self-defence sprays such as, pepper spray and mace are prohibited entry into Canada.
  • All firearms (ie: hunting rifles, shotguns) and personal protection devices (ie: stun guns, mace, pepper spray) must be declared.
  • Travelers should be advised that certain knives, even those used for hunting and fishing, may be considered prohibited weapons.
  • Canadian law requires that officials seize firearms and weapons from those crossing the border who deny having them in their possession. Seized firearms and weapons are never returned.

In all cases, travelers must declare to Canadian Customs authorities any firearms and weapons in their possession when entering Canada. There are often facilities near border crossings where weapons may be stored, pending the traveler's return to the United States, but this should be done before attempting to enter Canada.

Visitors may temporarily import restricted firearms, such as pistols or revolvers, provided they get an Authorization to Transport (ATT) in advance from a chief firearms officer.

Seasonal residents may import restricted firearms, but must have a Possession and Acquisition Licence or a valid Firearms Acquisition Certificate, in addition to an ATT.

For more information on importing a firearm into Canada, request a copy of the pamphlet called Importing a Firearm or Weapon Into Canada (RC4227) from a Canadian embassy, consulate, or mission, or from one of the customs offices listed on page 22.
