Nova Scotia Events100th Anniversary Changing of the Guard Festival and Grand Encampment. (7/17/2006 -7/25/2006) Each summer on Citadel Hill the Pipes and Drums of the 78th Highlanders of the 1869-71 period are re-created for the entertainment of visitors at the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site of Canada. The daily mid-Victorian period living history program includes daily firings of the noon gun, maneuvers by infantry detachments, concerts by the pipes and drums, demonstrations by soldiers' wives, guided tours and ghost walks. Bonus points: In 2006 Parks Canada will commemorate the departure of British troops by reenacting the event. Relive a moment in history when British forces departed from Citadel Hill and marched down Sackville Street and right onto their departing troopship. The historic event ended more than a 300-year occupation of the British forces in Nova Scotia. As was done historically, sentries will be posted at key government and heritage buildings, where possible, such as e.g. Government House, Province house, Queen's Wharf. The 78th Highlanders infantry, pipes and drums will also present demonstrations at regional festivals and events.
